Comparison of tempered glass and acrylic
Tempered glass is actually a kind of prestressed glass. In order to improve the strength of the glass, chemical or physical methods are usually used to form compressive stress on the surface of the glass. When the glass is subjected to external force, it first offsets the surface stress, thereby improving the bearing capacity and enhancing the resistance of the glass itself—wind pressure, cold and heat, impact, etc. And acrylic is a kind of plastic. It has crystal-like transparency, the light transmittance of more than 92%, and acrylic colored with dye has a good color development effect. In addition, the acrylic sheet has excellent weather resistance, high surface hardness and surface gloss, and relatively good high-temperature performance. The wear resistance of acrylic sheets is close to that of aluminium, and it is not regularly corroded by a variety of chemicals.
There are two main advantages of tempered glass:
The first is that the strength is several times higher than that of ordinary glass, the bending strength is 3 to 5 times that of ordinary glass, and the impact strength is 5 to 10 times that of ordinary glass. Safe to use is tempered glass
The second main advantage: it’s increased bearing capacity improves its fragile nature, even if the tempered glass is damaged, it will be small fragments without acute angles, which greatly reduces the damage to the human body. There is an increase of 2 to 3 times, and it can generally withstand the temperature difference change of more than 150LC, which has a significant effect on preventing a thermal explosion.
Tempered glass has the characteristics of high impact strength (4 to 5 times higher than ordinary flat glass), high bending strength (5 times higher than ordinary flat glass), good thermal stability, smoothness, transparency, etc. In the event of super impact damage, the fragments are in the form of scattered fine particles without sharp edges and corners, so it is also called safety glass.
Disadvantages of tempered glass: 1. The tempered glass can no longer be cut and processed. The glass can only be processed to the required shape before tempering, and then tempered. 2. Although the strength of tempered glass is stronger than that of ordinary glass, However, tempered glass has the possibility of self-explosion (breaking itself), while ordinary glass does not have the possibility of self-explosion.
Acrylic characteristics: It has good processing performance, which can be used for thermoforming (including molding, blow molding, and vacuum forming), or drilling, turning, cutting, etc. by mechanical processing. The transparent acrylic sheet has a transparent light rate comparable to that of glass, but the density is only one-third of that of glass. In addition, it is not as fragile as glass, and even if it is broken, it will not form sharp fragments like glass, acrylic is not as “fragile” like glass, and its impact resistance is 200 times stronger than ordinary glass, and it will hardly break. Its load-bearing capacity varies with thickness, and the thicker it is, the stronger it is. But acrylic heat dissipation is relatively poor. This material is most afraid of sharp object scratches, but such scratches are also easy to repair.
